Today I delivered my seminar on Director Katie Mitchell, I really wanted to give everyone a lot of information about her and how she works, what her techniques are and what she looks for in actors and the creative team. When I Read over her book The Directors Craft, A handbook for the theatre, to get information I found her really interesting in what she likes to do to start off her a process as a director to create a performance. I like the fact that she is very involved with her actors and get them to come up with the ideas instead of telling them exactly what to do spoon feeding them.
I think my workshop went really well, I know that the group doesn't really like improvisation and don't feel that comfortable doing it so that is what I wanted to base my tasks on. As Katie Mitchell likes her actors to improvise during her workshops I thought it fit perfectly with what I wanted them to do. I wanted to get everyone out of their comfort zone and make them realise that improvisation isn't all that bad. I waned to them to start off with an exercise Katie Mitchell does herself with her actors by getting them to think about a dream they have had recently and act it out.
Most of the group said that they want to look into Katie Mitchell more now for their self directors pieces so Im glad that I was able to educate and keep people interested in her work and techniques.
We started on "A Day In The Life" and tried to just think of all the different aspects and problems actors face when trying to make it into the business. We wanted to show the different sides, so we want to tell two completely different stories of two different people, one starting out and one who has been in the business a long time.
